Anne’s works comprise traditional media such as pencil, aquarelle, pastels, charcoal, gouache and oil. The artist’s works draw inspiration from surrealism which let her express her ideas about mankind, matter and the universe.

In her paintings Anne Melan explores a multitude of ideas regarding the genesis of physical form and substance. Her depictions portray both recognizable and enigmatic entities that remain in a state of becoming, undergoing creation or metamorphosis. Some entities are juxtaposed alongside their incomplete iterations, oftentimes elevated on pedestals that grant them newfound independence and wholeness. Through the presence of single-celled organisms suspended in space, we come to understand that a process is beginning to unfold before us. The three-dimensional rooms they inhabit, alongside the meticu- lously crafted execution of each image, convinces us of the existence of these abstract forms, even though they may have never been beheld. The convergence of abstraction and figuration within each composition results in environments that are both real and unreal, providing us with a time-lapsed insight into several moments and phases of a body that is yet to be fully realized.
